Marc Deschênes, B.Sc.Eng. - Geological Engineering & Avalanche Specialist

Marc has an academic background in geological engineering with experience in geological mineral exploration, geomorphology, terrain mapping and slope stability assessments. Marc has been completing assessments for Sitkum as an independent subcontractor since 2000. He focusses on risk assessments in forest development planning and mining developments projects, including terrain stability mapping, terrain stability assessments, snow avalanche risk assessments, soil erosion assessments, landslide risk assessments, drainage plans, hydrological impact assessments for proposed harvesting and road construction, and road deactivation/reconstruction prescriptions.

Marc is a professional member of the Canadian Avalanche Association (CAA) has been trained in snow avalanche hazard mapping and assessments through the CAA. Marc has completed numerous avalanche related professional development courses including Avalanche Operations Level 3, Advanced Snow Avalanche Hazard Mapping Course, Avalanche Control Blasting, Advanced Weather Skills, and Avalanche Search and Rescue Response. This combination of education and experience allows Marc to produce and implement effective avalanche safety plans consistent with WorkSafeBC requirements. In addition, his familiarity with harvesting prescriptions and operations allows for practical snow avalanche assessments and mitigation options with respect to harvesting and forest road access.  Marc is also a member of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) and works during the winters as a ski guide, avalanche safety instructor, and consultant.
